This table is intended as a guide only and exact feeding amounts should be varied according to your puppy’s breed, sex, condition and activity levels. Puppies should be fed 3-4 times per day. When introducing VetSpec into your puppy’s diet we advise that this is done gradually over a period of 5-10 days until it replaces all other food. Fresh drinking water should always be available.

Technical Focus

Food digestibility in young dogs

Rapidly growing young dogs have higher requirements for energy and nutrients than adult dogs but have less digestive capacity and smaller mouths and teeth. This is especially true of smaller and toy breeds. It is therefore imperative that the digestibility of the diet ingredients is as high as possible and the quality of the ingredients is also optimal. However, it is important to remember that every dog’s efficiency of feed conversion is different and therefore owners should assess body condition regularly and adjust the amount of food fed to maintain the ideal body condition throughout the growth period. Over-feeding a young growing dog can lead to hyperplastic obesity which can lead to health problems later in life.
